"Voyage of No Return"
by Brian Campbell (2004)
A story of love and passion set on the hot Caribbean island of Montserrat. Irish and African cultures embrace against a background of racism, and simmering slave rebellion.
The beautiful volcanic island of Montserrat is the only place outside Ireland to celebrate St Patrick's Day as a national holiday. The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean has placenames rich in Irish heritage, and its people carry Irish surnames which point to a history touched by Irish settlement. But all is not as it seems... St Patrick's Day celebrations reveal the tensions between the Irish overseers and plantation owners and the slaves.
Dubbeljoint's new play will explore themes of racism, identity and people's search for a place in the world. Through a mix of music and drama, it journeys from slavery to racism as it shines a light on Irish people's involvement in the Afro-Caribbean world.
